ITV's success led to the BBC losing much of its audience, as noted in the 1962 Pilkington Report, which decided to award an additional television station to the BBC on the basis that ITV was, by comparison, lacking in serious programming. In 1964, BBC2 was launched and BBC tv became BBC1.

The 1962 Pilkington Report noted that the BBC had lost much of its audience and decided to award an additional television station to the BBC on the basis that ITV was in comparison lacking in serious programming.

BBC tv became BBC1 when BBC2 launched on April 20, 1964.

BBC1 debuted the classic SciFi shows Doomwatch, Survivors, and Blake's 7, alongside Doctor Who, of course.

The channels adopted the full number spellings in their logos from October 4, 1997.
